Last weekend I did a two day workshop with Carol Soderlund. She taught us how to use soy wax and procion dyes to create batik. It was fun and I learned so much. Back in the 70's (aka hippie era) I used the traditional beeswax/paraffin method and natural dyes, which were beautiful but very labor intensive, toxic and messy! Carol's way is so much easier and safer. It lends itself to small or large pieces of work. I need much more practice and time to play. I have some dye and I did find a $20 electric fry pan to melt wax in! Tomorrow I buy the wax and I am ready to roll! Below is a sample of Carol's work.

Here is some detail from the curved piece project. The full photo is in my gallery page. Not sure I would jump to do this technique again. It is a lot of work and I think applique would accomplish the same effect. It is much more forgiving to work in curves though than to try to keep things square and straight!! The title is So You Think You Can Dance after one my favorite shows to watch on tv. :) How can it be mid November already! Lots has happened since my last post. Went to Vegas....of all things I saw a beautiful Monet exhibit. I am inspired to one day do a reproduction in textiles of his Charing Cross Bridge. It took my breath away. Of course it looks more spectacular in the gallery!
